In the spring of 1999 my partner
suggested we go to his hometown of Carrot River Sask. and stay
with an outfitter friend of his to hunt bear. After missing a
beautiful blonde in '96 I went 80 uneventful hours on bear stand
in my quest for my first critter with a stickbow. Brian went out
2 weeks ahead of time to set up our baits. In exchange for
helping wherever we were needed, the outfitter was providing
bait and accommodations. It was a good deal for everyone.

The first 3 days were uneventful
despite the bait being cleaned out each morning. Brian did see a
sow with cubs the second evening on his bait. The fourth day a
friend of the outfitters asked if I wanted to hunt one of his
baits. He told me he had videoed 7 different bears on that bait
just the week before. I was pumped! I was in the bait for less
than and hour when the first bear showed. He wasn't the biggest
bear but he was nice and I needed to break the ice on this
stickbow thing.
After he settled down I drew back and
suddenly saw the arrow buried to the fletch in his shoulder. I
gave him 45 min. since there was lots of light left. I found
bloodied parts of my Larch arrow where the bear ran through
thick willows near the bait. After that there was no blood at
all but I followed the scuff marks in the leaves for 70 yards to
my bear. The arrow had taken out one lung and the artery that
runs under the backbone. He had a beautiful jet black coat and
scored an even 18".
I took him with 50 # Jack Kempf
Custom Hunter Recurve, larch arrows and a Zwickey head.
